欧·亨利善于描写美国社会，尤其是描写纽约百姓的生活。他的作品构思新颖，语言诙谐，结局常常出人意外；又因描写了众多的人物，富于生活情趣，被誉为“美国生活的幽默百科全书”。 欧·亨利的一生共发表小说300多部，收入小说集《白菜与国王》（Cabbages ad Kigs,1904）、《四百万》（The Four Millio ,1906）、《西部的心》（Heart of the West,1907）、《滚石》（Rollig Stoes,1913）等集子。其中一些名篇如《爱的奉献》（A Service of Love）、《警察与赞美诗》(The Cop ad the Athem)、《带家具出租的房间》（The Furished Room）、《麦琪的礼物》（The Gift of the Magi）、《最后一片藤叶》（The Last Leaf）等使他获得了世界声誉。基于他对世界短篇小说创作的贡献，1918年，在他去世仅8年后，美国就设立了“欧·亨利纪念奖”以表彰他的文学功绩并专门奖励每年度全美最佳短篇小说。
