本书是高等学校英语专业高年级教材Book 5，Book 6和Book 7的续编，供四年级下学期使用。它不仅适合高等师范院校，而且也适合其他高等院校。.
本书的编写原则是继Book 7之后，继续贯彻《高等学校英语专业高年级英语教学大纲》(试行本)对阅读课提出的各项教学要求。
考虑到四年级下学期为最后一个学期，扣除毕业论文阶段，整个学期的上课时间少于其他学期，本书共选10篇课文，略少于前三册。每课平均长度为2，500词左右，课文都有一定的难度。篇目大多选自60年代之后具有时代气息的作品，涉及到文学、英美文化、当代西方社会、价值观念等多方面的内容，包含各种文章的体裁。同Book 7一样，每篇课文之后都有对该篇课文的分析与评论。本册的重点是在第七册学习各种体裁文章的基础上，进一步引导学生抓住作品的要点，分析文章的谋篇布局，运用正确的观点来加以评述，提高阅读鉴赏能力，以及英语的表达与写作能力。..
课文后的练习，与Book 7一样，包括6个项目，以期通过这些练习，更好地达到《大纲》所规定的要求。
教师与学生在使用本册时，可参照Book 7中《编者的话》的有关说明。
在编写过程中，宋孔尧同志编了词汇表，华东师范大学外语系资料室与打字室提供了不少方便。
本书由北京师范大学钱瑗教授审定，她提出了不少宝贵意见。在此，我们一并表示感谢。...
