序言
PREFACE
The Programs
The Radio Wave series brings authentic-quality radio reports into the domain of the ESL or EFL learner. The series includes six programs: the health Edition, the Entertainment Edition, the Business Edition, the Environment Edition, the Sports Edition, and the Music Edition. Each program features five-minute report in a "newsmagazine" format. The information is presented in a style that blends jounalistic and academic formats. These programs open the doors to a wealth of North American culture in a radio format that is typically American. The student will learn about current topics that are heard on radio and television, in public discussion, in academic, professional, and social situations. This series allows the learner to become more comfortable with and confident about listening to radio reports. In short, Radio Waves brings real-world listening and exciting ideas into the learner's realm of experience.
Language Principles
Each of the editions in the Radio Waves series includes a tape and a workbook. The workbook materials are based on a set of fundamental language-learning and teaching principles. These principles include the following:
1. Skills are not acquired in isolation. Listening is intimately tied to speacking, and reading and writing about what was heard help improve listening comprehension.
2. Language learning in the classroom is best facilitated by interaction. The learner should have many opportunuties to exchange information with others.
3. Listening comprehension develops as the learner listens actively to complete a task. The learner has a purpose in listening and can use what has been understood.
4. A learner uses certain skills and strategies to understand what is heard. These can be identified and improved on through the undertaking of a well-designed task or series of tasks.
Skills and Strategies
Radio Waves is designed to help the learner acquire the skills and strategies needed to get more from listening. The series makes listening to and understanding radio reports easier. The skills and strategies that are used and developed are transferable to other listening context, such as formal and informal social settings and academic settings.
The principal skills developed are listening for main ideas and note taking. The series shows the learner how to find and state the main ideas in a report. The learner is guided in learning to take notes from radio reports. Some programs in the series teach the learner to recognize the organization of journalistic reports that follow an academic format. THese programs present a series of main ideas and supporting points, and elaborate on each sequence.
An approach more frequently used in this series is focused note taking. Taking focused notes involves writing supporting points and details related to a general question. The general question reflects an important point or idea the reporter chooses to focus on and develop, either through interviews or through explanations and commentary on the topic. The purpose of focused note taking is to sensitize the learner to the organization of radio reports, which can often be determined from the reporters' questions or the selection of issues for the program.
This series helps the learner to develop a number of useful strategies so that listening can be approached with more cinfidence. The learner needs to be shown how to carry out a number of different learning tasks. To acomplish this the learner should know which strategies to use and develop. These strategies include the following:
1. Looking for the overall structure of the information.
2. Knowing the singals used to introduce main points.
3. Knowing that main points or ideas are usually followed by information that elaborates on those ideas.
4. Knowing that information is often restated.
5. Recognizing key information(main ideas and details) and distinguishing it from unimportant information, ffor example, asides, personal remarks, and certain features of spoken language such as false starts or interrupters.
